Ruma Devi .... From a dropout to Harvard. Born in 1988 in Rawatsar, Barmer, Rajasthan, lost her mother young, raised by relatives, and dropped out of school after Class 8 due to poverty. Married at 17 and soon after lost her newborn son within 48 hours due to lack of medical facilities, which became a turning point in her life. Learned embroidery and sewing from her grandmother, which later became her livelihood. In 2006, formed a self-help group with 10 village women, each contributing ₹100 to buy a second-hand sewing machine, and began making embroidered bags and textiles. Joined Gramin Vikas Evam Chetna Sansthan (GVCS) in 2008 and became its President by 2010. First showcased her group’s work in Delhi in 2010 and later participated as a designer in Rajasthan Heritage Week in 2016. Built a network of more than 30,000 rural women artisans, training them in embroidery, applique, and traditional crafts, helping them earn sustainable livelihoods. Honored with several recognitions including the Nari Shakti Puraskar in 2018, an honorary doctorate in Art & Textile, Designer of the Year (2019), and appearances on Kaun Banega Crorepati (2019) and Indian Idol (2021). Took leadership roles as Goodwill Ambassador and Chief Designer for Tribes India and State Brand Ambassador for Rajeevika. Invited to Harvard University’s India Conference in 2020, where she delivered talks and conducted embroidery workshops for students. Represented Indian artisans internationally in countries like Germany, USA, UK, Singapore, Sri Lanka, and Thailand. Rose from a Class 8 dropout to a globally recognized designer and social leader, becoming a symbol of resilience, empowerment, and cultural pride. Follow vishakha Jangir for more such insights.
