What happens when one regulation changes the destiny of an entire industry overnight? India has just seen it. The recent ban on online real money gaming has shocked the ecosystem. Startups that were celebrated yesterday are questioning survival today. Probo, once a pioneer in prediction markets, has already become the first casualty. On the human level, the ban addresses real issues. Gaming addiction is destroying lives, trapping youngsters in debts, breaking families. But on the economic level, this sudden move has wiped out jobs, years of work and billions of value. Founders and investors who trusted the India story are now uncertain. Could this have been handled better? A systematic approach with strict KYC, spending limits, age checks and addiction support could have saved users and startups together. Instead, one order crushed both. The bigger debate is this: can India protect its youth and still nurture innovation? Can regulation be predictable rather than sudden?
