I onboarded a co-founder for my startup idea, but after some time he stopped responding without explanation. A month later, I removed him from all groups, after which he changed passwords to emails/drive. He then called a potential new co-founder warning him not to join, and also demanded a refund from the branding agency for the ₹12,500 advance he had contributed (the only money he put in, while I’ve already spent ~₹25K myself). The agency blocked him after repeated calls. Now he is messaging me, demanding not only his money back but also “compensation” for time/effort, even though we are at pure idea stage with zero assets, code, or designs. Frankly, I don’t feel like refunding or even engaging further, given his ungentlemanly behavior. What should I do??

Did you warn him before removing him? It’s a professional courtesy to warn and it has to be documented over email as a standard. If getting repeated, you can take action. Or if you have a policy in place for such consequences, you’re right to do so. But if these steps weren’t envolved, and you didn’t have a policy in place, technically he can’t be removed legally. Coming to the investment part, he’s entitled to have his investment back based on the evaluation. It doesn’t have to do anything about what you feel. I wonder what lead him to ghost you for a month though. :)
