She came in late. Again. But this time, I didn’t say a word. I had a junior employee, brilliant on paper, full of energy during interviews, but inconsistent at work. Some days, she showed up late. Other days, distracted. Her manager wanted to escalate the issue. Instead, I asked her to grab a coffee with me. She told me she’d lost her father a few months ago and was now the sole breadwinner. Her mornings started at 5 AM, cooking, packing tiffins, getting kids ready, dropping them to school, before rushing to the office. She was carrying a mountain of grief, responsibility, and fatigue, but never once brought it up at work. We reassigned her to a more flexible shift, access to counselling and months later, she became one of our most reliable team leads. Sometimes performance problems aren’t laziness, they’re unspoken battles. We talk about leadership as strategy, scale, and vision. But more often than not, it’s about asking the right question at the right time: “Are you okay?”
