India’s first biodegradable milk packets just launched. They look like plastic, but disappear in 6 months. While most brands talk about sustainability, Nandini, Karnataka’s flagship milk brand, is walking the talk with their latest release. On World Environment Day, the Karnataka Milk Federation kicked off a pilot to use biodegradable milk packets made from corn starch, in a first-of-its-kind move in India. These packets resemble plastic, but naturally break down in just 6 months, compared to the 500+ years traditional plastic takes to degrade. The pilot launched at the new Mega Dairy in Kanakapura, starting in Hunasanahalli village. So far? No leaks. No quality concerns. Why this matters: Bengaluru alone consumes nearly 25 lakh plastic milk packets every single day. That’s a mountain of waste, most of which ends up in landfills or water bodies. If scaled across the board, this small switch could have a massive impact. The local Bamul unit (Bangalore Milk Producers’ Co-Operative) is already preparing to expand the initiative across all its packaging. While this is not the first time, such an innovation has come about and only time will tell if its economically feasible and scalable, the early signs are enough to make one hopeful🤞🏾 Would you pick the biodegradable option if it was available? Hat tip to The Better India for bringing this story to light.
