I appreciate the environmental intentions, but gamifying tree planting was always a weird approach. Real environmental action doesn't need to be tied to browser usage. If they wanted to make a genuine impact, they could have just donated to established reforestation organizations annually. The fact that they needed user engagement to justify it shows it was more about user retention than environmental impact.
