I see multiple reasons for this. In addition to large population and huge competition even for the blue collar jobs , I guess the blue collar jobs are looked down in the society. In western countries, it's a norm for a person to fund their own education doing a part time . Here, we know parents want to fund the education which doesn't give a huge motivation to teenagers. Moreover, this huge competition even in the education force them to focus on one thing rather than trying to balance between both. Reasons are endless and every family has their own personal story for their choices.
