When Uber Tried to Outsmart Apple — and Got Caught 📌 In 2015, Uber was on a trajectory to explosive growth — but it faced an issue. Fraud. Drivers were taking advantage of the system using stolen or reset iPhones to open fake accounts and claim referral bonuses. To combat this fraud, Uber developed a very sneaky solution: a "fingerprinting" process that tracked unique iPhones — even when users deleted the app. That was a breach of Apple's privacy rules, but Uber had more nefarious plans. To avoid detection, Uber added a line of code that created a geo-fence around Apple's headquarters in Cupertino. So when anyone at Apple opened the app — boom — the tracking code would disappear. Can't track this! But eventually, the Apple engineers caught on. And then there was a meeting. Tim Cook called Travis Kalanick to Apple HQ. In a quiet yet firm voice he stated: "You’re violating our rules. Cut it out. Or we are going to pull Uber from the App Store." To Uber, that would be cataclysmic — no iPhones, no business. Kalanick fell in line and removed the code. The story leaked in 2017, revealing not just a privacy breach, but Uber's willingness to break the rules behind the scenes.
