Giving equity to "random people" is the fastest way to kill your startup. Too many founders dilute themselves to death by giving 10-20% equity to every skilled person they meet. Hire employees, pay them well, give stock options later when they prove themselves. Equity should be earned through sweat and commitment, not just skill.

Before giving anyone equity, ask yourself: Would I want this person as a business partner for 10 years? Because that's what equity means. For employees, you can fire them. For equity partners, you're stuck unless you have rock-solid vesting and buyback clauses. Get a lawyer involved for any equity deals.

What stage is your startup at? Do you have revenue/funding? What roles are you trying to fill - technical, marketing, sales? Also, how well do you know these "random people"? The answers completely change whether equity partnerships make sense or if you should just hire.
