India just became the No.1 user base for ChatGPT. It sounds like a milestone — and in some ways, it is. We’re hungry for innovation, fast to adopt, and unafraid to explore. But here’s the uncomfortable truth: We’re consuming — not creating. Fueling their AI — not building our own. Training their models — not owning the IP. Cheering from the sidelines — not defining the game. Yes, Indians are CEOs of global tech giants. Yes, our engineers power Silicon Valley. But the core technology? Still foreign. Still proprietary. Still not ours. Despite having: One of the largest pools of tech talent, Millions of young innovators, And an exploding creator economy... We still don’t have our own GPT. Our own Gemini. Our own DeepSeek. Why? Because our system plays it safe. Because investors shy away from deep tech risk. Because policy still lags behind ambition. Because building takes time — and we want returns tomorrow. So yes, we can celebrate our usage stats. But let’s not confuse participation with leadership. India doesn’t need to be the biggest user. It needs to be the boldest builder.
