A surprising trend is emerging in techโpeople, especially Gen Z students in the U.S., are swapping their smartphones for basic โdumb phonesโ that canโt even run Instagram. Google searches for these minimal devices have surged since 2020. This shift is rooted in digital minimalism, a concept which promotes intentional use of technology. The reasons are clear: neuroscientists report the average person gets distracted every 3 minutes, and it takes 23 minutes to refocus. A quarter of those interrupted tasks are never completed. Dumb phones offer fewer distractions, longer battery life, and more privacy. While stepping away from tech is a privilege, this trend signals an opportunityโnot to abandon technology, but to design tools that give users more control over their digital lives.
