“Valuation made me feel like I was winning. Now I realise—I was setting myself up to lose.” That’s what a founder friend told me last week. He built a great brand. Strong traction. Big valuation. But the investors he brought in? Flashy money with no understanding of the space. Now, they’re pressuring him for unrealistic growth. Why? Because their LPs are pressuring them. He said, “Had I brought in the right investors—those who knew the game—I’d be building with peace, not panic.” It hit me hard. As founders, we focus on product, team, GTM. But forget that investors are long-term partners. Raising money ≠ success. Raising right = compounding value. In my journey of working with 500+ founders, I’ve seen this often.
