Not everyone has the capital or risk appetite to invest in smaller companies. The Nifty50 exists specifically because it represents stable, established businesses that the average investor can feel comfortable putting their savings into. Suggesting that following Nifty500 makes you somehow more "Indian" or a better investor is ridiculous gatekeeping.
