Over the last year, the buzz around GLP-1 receptor agonists—like semaglutide (Ozempic, Wegovy)—has taken both the medical world and social media by storm. But here’s what many aren’t talking about: > GLP-1 is not magic. It’s a mechanism. GLP-1 is a natural hormone that slows gastric emptying, reduces appetite, and improves insulin sensitivity. The pharmaceutical versions mimic this hormone, offering real results for people struggling with obesity and type 2 diabetes. But here’s the catch: It’s not a replacement for lifestyle change. Side effects like nausea, vomiting, and gallbladder issues are real. Long-term safety is still under scrutiny. It’s expensive and not sustainable for many in India. As a dietitian, I’ve worked with many individuals who ask: “Should I start GLP-1 meds?” My answer is: Only when medically indicated AND when lifestyle interventions have been exhausted.
