I would name it in simple terms. it's a scam :( ---- Use of constant notifications, big win advertisements, and influencer marketing triggers FOMO (Fear of Missing Out). Gamification elements (points, leaderboards) mimic addiction mechanics seen in gambling. Users can enter games for as little as ₹10–₹50, making it seem affordable initially, but frequent playing adds up. Ads showcase success stories of users winning lakhs/crores, creating unrealistic expectations. Most users lose money, but winners are highlighted to attract more participants. In WhatsApp groups or friend circles, discussions around fantasy sports push others to participate and "not miss out". When users lose continuously, they may turn to credit cards, payday loans, or borrow from friends/family to "recover losses". Fantasy platforms often operate in a legal grey area, with minimal restrictions or user protection against addiction/loss. Loss of money causes frustration or denial, which fuels more irrational gameplay and further losses. For companies, these platforms are highly profitable. They earn via platform fees, ad revenue, and partnerships with brands and sports leagues. Some state governments legalize and tax fantasy sports, generating significant GST and corporate tax revenue. For the average user, fantasy platforms are mostly loss-making. Only a small fraction of users win significant amounts. It promotes gambling culture under the label of “skill gaming”, risking financial and mental health—especially among youth and middle-class families. While fruitful for companies and governments, these platforms often lead to harm for individuals not financially or emotionally prepared to deal with the risks.
