In the software world, the lean startup approach advocates for starting with customer discovery and building minimal viable products based on real user needs. Elon's approach of "build a fancy demo first" is how you end up with solutions looking for problems. Tesla worked because electric vehicles were a known need with clear market potential. For most startups with limited resources, you should start by validating the problem and finding real customers willing to pay for a solution, then build only what's necessary to deliver value. This "demo first" mentality is how you burn through capital with nothing to show for it.
