This is completely backwards for most modern startups. In the software world, the lean startup approach advocates for starting with customer discovery and building minimal viable products based on real user needs. Elon's approach of "build a fancy demo first" is how you end up with solutions looking for problems. Tesla worked because electric vehicles were a known need with clear market potential. For most startups with limited resources, you should start by validating the problem and finding real customers willing to pay for a solution, then build only what's necessary to deliver value. This "demo first" mentality is how you burn through capital with nothing to show for it.
