BeReal, once hailed as the "anti-Instagram" and rapidly gaining popularity with over 80 million downloads, has experienced a dramatic decline, with search interest plummeting by 94% and a sale to Voodoo for €500 million in 2024 after failing to generate revenue. Launched in 2020 by two French developers, the app required users to capture unfiltered moments within a two-minute window each day, appealing to Gen Z's desire for authenticity amidst curated social media. However, as the novelty wore off, the app's restrictive features became burdensome, leading to a significant drop in daily active users from 15 million in October 2022 to just 6 million by March 2023. BeReal's failure to monetize effectively, coupled with its lack of adaptability to user preferences, mirrors the downfall of Vine, ultimately resulting in its acquisition by a mobile gaming company, raising concerns about its future direction.
