Decoding Secret Investor interactions!! 1) Investor: “Lets hop on a quick call to learn more about your company” Founder’s Translation: They want to look interested, but their real decision will happen later after 50 other calls 2) Investor: “Send me your pitch deck, and I'll share it with my partners” Founder’s Translation: The pitch deck is going straight to their ‘To Be Reviewed’ folder, aka the black hole 3) Investor: “We love what you're doing - its such a great idea!” Founder’s Translation: They've told five other founders the same thing today 4) Investor: “Let's revisit this once you hit some key milestones” Founder’s Translation: They want me to prove everything before they take a risk 5) Investor: “How do you differentiate yourself from the competition?” Founder’s Translation: They Googled my competitors five minutes ago and now want me to justify my existence 6) Investor: “This could be interesting for some of my friends - let me see if they'd like to invest” Founder’s Translation: They're not sold, but they're willing to delegate the 'No' 7) Investor: “We typically dont lead rounds, but we could follow” Founder’s Translation: They will only jump in once someone else takes the risk 8) Investor: “Can you model out your revenue for the next five years?” Founder’s Translation: They want me to predict the future, even though no startup ever gets it right 9) Investor: “I'll be out of town for the next couple of weeks, but I'll follow up when I'm back.” Founder’s Translation: They are ghosting me politely 10) Investor: “Lets start small and see how things go.” Founder’s Translation: They don't want to miss out, but they're not ready to fully commit 11) Investor: “We dont usually lead rounds, but we're happy to participate once someone else commits” Founder’s Thought: So you want me to pitch everyone else first, get someone on board, and then you will swoop in?
