The Rise and Fall of GoPro! So GoPro was an action camera brand started by Nick Woodman in 2002. He went on a surfing trip but couldn’t capture his best moments as expected. So he launched GoPro and introduced its first product—the Hero camera. Fast forward to 2014—GoPro went public, raising $427M at a $2.95B valuation. Nick Woodman got $284M in stock options, making him the highest paid CEOs in the US at the time. Then To diversify, they planned to enter the drone market. After talks with DJI failed, they made their own drone. But that backfired, leading to a $217M loss. By 2019, GoPro slashed its R&D budget by 57% to just $153M, while DJI and Insta360 kept innovating. At the same time, phone cameras got way better, reducing the need for a separate action camera for most people. Today, Gorpo which was once the king of action cameras, is valued at just $121M even below its book value and is losing money every quarter.
