Can The Hundred kill the IPL? After the IPL’s success, cricket boards worldwide have launched their own T20 leagues, but none have matched IPL’s dominance. England, the birthplace of cricket, introduced The Hundred in 2021, aiming to create an even faster and more entertaining format. The format features 100-ball innings instead of 120 (T20), with bowlers allowed to deliver up to 10 consecutive balls. There are fewer fielding restrictions, encouraging high-scoring matches, and the game lasts only about 2.5 hours. It also gives equal focus to men’s and women’s cricket. The ECB retains 51% control of teams, selling only 49% stakes to investors. To boost viewership, tickets are cheap, and matches are broadcast for free on BBC and YouTube. The league also prioritizes domestic players, allowing a maximum of four overseas cricketers per team. However, The Hundred offers less financial incentive than the IPL, making it unlikely to attract top Indian players. While The Hundred introduces a fresh format, its lack of IPL-level star power could limit its global appeal. But if it delivers thrilling, high-scoring matches, it may still find a strong audience. Would you watch The Hundred if it were free to stream, even without big-name players? Let me know!
