The untold story of ZOOM! Zoom is a pretty well-known app since 2020. But Covid was not the only reason for their success. There was more! So, Zoom was started by Eric Yuan, who was born in China. He wished to move to Silicon Valley, inspired by Bill Gates’ speech! But this wasn’t easy. His US visa was rejected 8 times before being approved. After getting into the US, he started his career at WebEx, a video conferencing tool later acquired by Cisco. Despite rising to the position of VP of Engineering, he was always dissatisfied with WebEx. Thus, Yuan left Cisco in 2011 to found Zoom. His goal? To create an excellent video conferencing app that was user-friendly, simple, and worked even with poor internet connections. But this wasn’t easy, as making a video conferencing app is expensive, and he required funding but Yuan, was again rejected multiple times as the category was saturated by players like Microsoft, Skype, and WebEx. But even then, he didn’t give up and any how launched Zoom in 2013. Yuan was so obsessed with the experience that Zoom built its own cloud infrastructure to ensure low latency and high call quality. This was expensive; investors called him crazy, but he did that anyway. And finally, due to Covid, Zoom’s growth exploded from 10 million users in Dec 2019 to over 300 million by April 2020. Zoom's success isn’t just about making an excellent product or overcoming rejection—it’s about taking bold risks, breaking norms, and prioritizing the user experience, no matter the cost.
