The 8 hour sleep pattern is about 200 years old, courtesy the Industrial revolution and 5 day work week. Prior to that the natural rhythm of the body was to sleep in phases. A person would sleep for 2 to 3 hours at a stretch, wake up do chores and then sleep again. Hence, poly phasic. You can break your 8 hours into multiple small parts of 1 or 2 hours spread across the day. Giving you more productive time.
