Why did India, despite its historical prominence and powerful empires, not pursue overseas expansion and empire-building in the same manner as European powers like the British, French, Dutch, and Portuguese?๐ค๐ญ

Because of the philosophy. We never believed in conquest. There was internal squabbling too. We believed in 'Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam' that whole world is a family which is not true now and was not true even back then
