ONE INTERESTING OBSERVATION SERIES DAY #17 Let me tell you something interesting about Rupay, our domestic payment network that's competing with Visa and MasterCard. The volume of transactions processed through it has been declining for 24 months straight. From June 2022 to June 2024, the number of transactions fell by over a third. Sounds concerning, but nothing surprising right? Here's the other side of the picture. The value of transactions processed is rising! June saw a 17% growth, the 5th consecutive month of double-digit growth. Volume down, value up! What could be the reason behind this? Lemmino!!

This could be an unintended consequence of the zero-MDR policy on RuPay debit cards. Merchants might be discouraging smaller RuPay transactions to avoid fees, pushing users towards UPI for those. The government might need to reassess this policy.

This could indicate a shift towards higher-value transactions on RuPay. Perhaps more people are using it for big-ticket purchases or B2B transactions, while smaller everyday transactions are moving to UPI or other platforms.

Did you see the rupay credit card upi system? That is definitely a driving force for the increased transactions. At least for higher ticket purchases.

I think its a classic case of quality over quantity. The average transaction value is clearly increasing. This could be good news for RuPay's revenue if they charge a percentage-based fee. I'd be curious to see how this compares to Visa and Mastercard trends in India.
