I take a rickshaw to work every day, and today's ride led to an interesting conversation - I asked the driver which app he prefers between Ola, Uber, and Rapido. He said he used Uber until they introduced a daily login charge of ₹40 + commission on each ride, making his costs INR 100 per day. Ola faced backlash for a similar charge and pivoted after many auto drivers removed their app. He now prefers Rapido, which charges only ₹20 daily with no additional commission. Curious, I asked about his profits. For every ₹1000 he makes, his total costs are around ₹250-300 (including CNG), so he pockets ₹700-750. He avoids short-distance rides (<8km) but has a friend in Viman Nagar, Pune, who does short rides and makes ~₹50k, pocketing ₹38-40k (Lot of corporate offices there). He concluded, "Pata hay Uber ko App bhi maintain karna padta hay but thoda reasonable rakho, phir tum bhi kamao aur hum bhi kamayenge." ⏭️The best product insights often come from simply talking to users.
