It's sham star season. NASA is planning to launch an artificial star into space, part of a $20 million mission designed to allow scientists to get more accurate measurements of stars. It may even allow researchers to study dark energy, the mysterious hypothetical form of energy about which we still know very little. The false star is roughly the size of a toaster and is outfitted with eight lasers. It is slated to orbit the planet at a synchronous orbit of 22,236 miles. Said one astronomer who is part of the mission: "The goal is to be able to figure out, for other planets orbiting other stars, whether they too could have oceans where life could presumably arise and live."
