Sorry for late response In a virtual classroom platform I assume to be something like live classes. Where one educator teachers the lesson to students through online video(live). In virtual classroom platform things gets a little limited. For increasing engagement in such mostly matters on Teacher, Story telling and meaningfulness of subject. To deal this improving on addressing students properly can significantly improve engagement and telling the scope/objective of subject(topic) can keep students motivated and engaged. Other things such as Vote, poll and Q&A are common techniques for increasing engagement.
