Coding is not a necessary skill to become a designer. But Knowing the basics of coding (Atleast the front end part) will help you empathise with the developers and keep their perspective in mind while designing screens. Imo companies should stop expecting designers to be good at hml, css or javascript and making it a requirement. On the other hand I feel designers should also understand a bit of backend processes as we grow because it will help when working on new features.
