I've been a UX/UI designer for five years, and I don't know how to code. I focus on the design, user research, and prototyping. I work closely with developers who bring my designs to life. It hasn't been a hindrance for me.

Coding is not a necessary skill to become a designer. But Knowing the basics of coding (Atleast the front end part) will help you empathise with the developers and keep their perspective in mind while designing screens. Imo companies should stop expecting designers to be good at hml, css or javascript and making it a requirement. On the other hand I feel designers should also understand a bit of backend processes as we grow because it will help when working on new features.

Those who know coding will say yes and those who don't will say no. There's advantage in knowing how to code. It helps you ideate feasible solutions to the problem fairly quicker than those you learn via trial and error.

I think it depends on the company and role. Some places might expect you to code, while others might have a strict separation between design and development. Research the job market you're aiming for.

From my experience, it's not absolutely necessary, but it definitely helps. Understanding basic HTML, CSS, and maybe a bit of JavaScript can make you a more versatile designer and improve your communication with developers.
