Today I Learned TIL#8 Scary origins of the treadmill !! 💀 The treadmill has a rather grim and unsettling history. It was originally invented in 1818 by English engineer Sir William Cubitt as a form of punishment and labor for prisoners. Dubbed the "everlasting staircase" or "prison machine," it forced inmates to climb endlessly on a revolving wooden cylinder, essentially walking in place. This cruel device was intended to be a harsh disciplinary tool, subjecting prisoners to monotonous and strenuous physical exertion as a means of reform through punitive labor. It wasn't until over a century later that the treadmill was reimagined as a piece of exercise equipment for fitness. Its origins as a brutal prison contraption cast an eerie shadow over its modern-day use in gyms and homes worldwide.
