Snapchat was founded in 2011 by Evan Spiegel, Bobby Murphy, and Reggie Brown while they were students at Stanford University. Originally named "Picaboo," the app allowed users to send photos that would disappear after a set time. They later renamed it Snapchat. The app quickly gained popularity, especially among younger users, due to its unique feature of disappearing messages, which encouraged more candid and spontaneous communication. Snapchat continued to evolve, introducing features like Stories, where users could share photos and videos that lasted for 24 hours before disappearing. Despite facing competition from other social media platforms like Instagram, Snapchat remained popular, continually innovating with features like augmented reality lenses and filters. In 2017, Snapchat parent company Snap Inc. went public with a successful IPO, solidifying its position as a major player in the social media landscape.
