They launched a marketing plan in which customers would win free food for every medal that America won. Like Gold medal= free burger Silver medal= free fries Bronze medal=free soft drink But but but What occurred was: Previously, America did not participate in the Olympics hosted by Soviet Russia. As a result, Russia and communist countries boycotted the Olympics held in Los Angeles. America won 174 medals, which surprised McDonald's. They ended up spending millions of dollars on this event and incurred massive losses. Moral: Do appropriate study and research before entering anything.
