YouTube keeps a close watch on Broadcasting Bill, ‘analysing it’, says Neal Mohan, CEO

The Ministry of Information and Broadcasting in India has released the draft of the Broadcasting Services (Regulation) Bill 2024, which intends to regulate over-the-top (OTT) platforms like YouTube. YouTube's CEO, Neal Mohan, mentioned that YouTube is part of the consultation process and is currently studying the bill. The proposed law would apply to content creators with over 1 million subscribers, irrespective of their nationality. It also requires platforms to register with self-regulatory bodies, screen content prior to publishing, and establish mechanisms for grievances and sign-language accessibility. Non-compliance could result in hefty fines and jail time. Mohan reiterated that YouTube will adhere to laws in any country and is committed to maintaining high content standards through its community guidelines. YouTube recently reported removing millions of videos in violation of these guidelines.
