Why Do Employees Keep Ignoring Workplace Cybersecurity Rules?

According to a study by Gartner, a significant number of employees, about 69%, have bypassed their organization's security policies in the past year. Many employees are willing to ignore cybersecurity guidelines for the sake of achieving business objectives. This behavior can be attributed to "neutralization techniques," which are rationalizations used to justify wrongful actions. These techniques include denial of injury, appeal to higher loyalties, denial of responsibility, metaphor of the ledger, defense of necessity, and condemnation of the condemners. Addressing these techniques through training courses and awareness messages can help employees understand the importance of cybersecurity policies and reduce their willingness to ignore them.
