Apple will now let users in the EU download apps through web sites, not just the App Store

Apple is allowing developers in the European Union to offer iPhone apps for direct download from their websites, rather than solely through the App Store. This move follows new regulations that require tech giants to comply with the Digital Markets Act (DMA). In order to distribute iOS apps directly, developers must meet criteria set by Apple and agree to new EU business terms, including a core technology fee. Web distribution offers an alternative to App Store distribution and marketplace apps, which allow developers to run their own app stores on iOS.

Apple will soon allow iOS developers located in the European Union to distribute their apps directly from their own websites, rather than exclusively through the App Store. The decision is in response to the Digital Markets Act (DMA), which aims to regulate Apple's activities regarding the App Store and iOS. Developers will have to meet certain requirements, including registering a website domain with Apple and obtaining users' approval to install apps from their sites. The move comes following criticism from developers and increased scrutiny from the European Commission.

Apple announced that software developers will soon be able to distribute apps directly to European Union (EU) users from their own websites. This move, set to take place in the spring, is in response to new EU rules that require Apple to open up its closed ecosystem. The Digital Markets Act (DMA) requires Apple to allow alternative app stores on iPhones and enable developers to opt out of using Apple's in-app payment system, which charges high fees. Apple will provide authorized developers with APIs to facilitate app distribution from the web and offer more flexibility in in-app promotions and transactions. These changes come amidst criticism of Apple's compliance efforts from rivals.

Govt blocks Ullu, ALTT and 23 other OTT apps for explicit content

The Ministry of Information & Broadcasting has blocked 25 OTT platforms and their mobile apps, including prominent services like Ullu, ALTT, Desiflix, and Big Shots, citing violations related to sexually explicit content. According to a report, services such as Prime Play, Hunters, Dream Films, Rangeen, and NeonX VIP have also been taken down. These platforms have come under regulatory scrutiny in the past for publishing erotic content marketed as adult entertainment. Despite the implementation of self-regulatory measures under the IT Rules 2021 and repeated government advisories, the Ministry alleged that many continued to bypass essential content certification and age filters. The blocked platforms largely operated via mobile apps, easily accessible through third-party app stores and aggressively promoted on social media. The government’s action includes both these apps and their corresponding websites, citing public concern regarding the availability of sexually explicit material to minors and the broader social fallout. For Ullu, this comes at a crucial juncture. The company reported Rs 100 crore revenue in FY24, and net profit declined by 16% to Rs 22.3 crore. In February last year, it had filed a draft red herring prospectus with SEBI to raise funds and list on the BSE SME platform. The present regulatory development could complicate its capital market ambitions as well as business prospects. While most of the websites and apps have stopped showing content following the government order, a handful of platforms continue to operate and remain accessible. The affected platforms have yet to issue a public statement regarding the ban or potential legal action.

The Indian government is considering a risk-based framework for social media and internet platforms to implement age-gating and parental consent systems. The plan aims to prevent minors from accessing inappropriate content and protect them from online predators. The framework may involve age verification using DigiLocker, Aadhaar-based authentication, digital tokens, or app store level verification. The government is emphasizing the need for stricter age-gating on social media platforms due to the higher potential for stranger-child interactions compared to other platforms like education apps or websites.
