Google to require disclosures for digitally altered content in election ads

Google will now require advertisers to disclose election ads that use digitally altered content, as part of its efforts to combat election misinformation. The disclosure update applies to ads that feature manipulated media, such as deepfakes, and advertisers will need to select a checkbox indicating the use of altered or synthetic content. Google will generate in-ad disclosures for certain formats, while others will require a prominent disclosure provided by the advertiser. The move comes as concerns grow over the misuse of generative AI in creating misleading content. Other platforms, such as Meta (formerly Facebook), have also implemented disclosure requirements for manipulated political ads.
