Electronics hardware industry seeks clarification on policy for imports of computer products

The electronics hardware industry has reached out to the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) seeking clarification on import policies for computer products. The industry urged for increased stakeholder engagement and expressed concerns about the potential impact on key sectors if the government implements import licensing requirements. The Import Management System (IMS) for ICT hardware products is set to end on September 30, 2024, and the industry requested the government to provide early guidance and a reasonable transition period to prevent unintended consequences. It also highlighted concerns about a possible quota system replacing the IMS, which could disrupt the market and hinder market access for many firms.
