Battling the spam goliath: Inside Trai's plan to clamp down on unwanted calls, spammers

The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (Trai) has been grappling with the issue of spam calls and messages flooding mobile phones. In 2018, Trai introduced a blockchain-based system called distributed ledger technology (DLT) to address this problem. However, technical challenges, a flood of abusive registrations, and the casual attitude of businesses have hampered the effectiveness of DLT. Trai has tried to address these issues through AI-based fraud detection and mandating removal of inactive registrations. Despite these efforts, the battle against spam continues, and Trai is working on identifying gaps and standardizing procedures to tackle the problem.
