Karnataka govt’s decision to set up fact-checking unit concerning: Editors Guild of India

The Editors Guild of India expressed concern over the Karnataka government's decision to establish a fact-checking unit to monitor fake news on social media platforms. The Guild emphasized that efforts to combat misinformation should be undertaken by independent bodies and not solely by the government, to prevent clamping down on dissenting voices. The Guild called for transparency, a clear scope, and governing mechanism for the fact-checking unit, as well as consultations with press organizations to safeguard press freedom. The Guild has also challenged amendments to IT Rules 2023 allowing such units, emphasizing the importance of natural justice and stakeholder involvement.
