If your infra can be disappeared by a single government order, you never owned it in the first place. Supabase went dark across India on February 24 under Section 69A. No notice, no timeline, no explanation. JioFiber, Airtel, ACT , all dead. One founder I spoke to saw Indian sign-ups drop to zero overnight. Another can't push production builds. The official workaround: "change DNS or use VPN." Try telling that to your paying users. This isn't about Supabase. It's about every Indian founder who parked their database, auth, and storage on a San Francisco company's promise of "open source." We just got reminded that open source doesn't mean immune to geography. The blocking order hit at the DNS level , your data sits untouched in Singapore, but your customers can't reach it. That's a different kind of lock-in. My take: multi-cloud was already table stakes. Now add multi-jurisdiction. If you're serving Indian users, you need at least one copy of critical infra inside Indian borders on an Indian provider. Not because it's better , because it still loads when the government hits the kill switch. The cost difference between AWS Mumbai and Supabase? About ₹3k per month for a funded startup. The cost of zero new users? Incalculable. The honest question: how many more block notices are sitting in draft? PostgreSQL is PostgreSQL , the risk isn't the software, it's the domain name.
