Open Source is a nightmare for corporate AI companies. Everyone says open source accelerates innovation. True. But for big AI companies, it’s an existential threat. Claude, ChatGPT, Gemini have burned billions on GPUs, research teams, safety layers, and product engineering. Then an open-source model drops that runs on consumer hardware, delivers comparable performance, costs almost nothing, and is fully customizable. Overnight, the moat shrinks. From a business view: open source kills pricing power, breaks vendor lock-in, and commoditizes intelligence. From a tech view: it moves faster, is transparent, and improves through community. The paradox? Big companies are funding the research that builds the ecosystem which will disrupt them. Open source isn’t just competition. It’s deflationary pressure on the entire AI industry. The real question is not whether open source will win — it’s how corporate AI will survive when intelligence becomes a commodity.
