India will not spend ₹500 to build football for the next generation. But, it will happily spend ₹50,000 to watch a foreign legend for a few minutes. The hype was massive. Sold-out tickets, sky-high prices, celebrity presence and endless reels. And then reality arrived. Limited minutes, no meaningful football, no lasting impact, no legacy created. What was sold as history turned into an expensive photo opportunity. This is not Messi’s fault. This is our ecosystem. In India, we treat football as a hobby, not a movement. We chase icons instead of infrastructure. We buy moments instead of systems. We spend lakhs to watch superstars, but hesitate to invest in grassroots leagues, coach education, youth tournaments, community grounds or local clubs. We love footballers. But, we do not truly love football. Until money, attention and intent move to grassroots, we will keep buying memories and never build a future.
