Ganga’s Silence Is Our Warning The Ganga isn’t just drying. She’s withdrawing. A new study reveals that the Ganga River - lifeline to over 600 million people - is experiencing its lowest streamflow in 1,300 years. Not since the Bengal famine, not since the 14th-century droughts, has her voice been this faint. Between 1991 and 2020, the river suffered four multi-year droughts, a frequency never seen before. Historically, such long-term droughts were spaced 70 to 200 years apart. Now they arrive like seasons. This isn’t just climate change. It’s climate consequence. Monsoons are weakening. Groundwater is vanishing. Aerosols are choking the sky. And the river - once fed by reverence and recharge - is being drained by extraction and neglect. We chant her name. We bathe in her waters. We call her sacred. But we do not listen. The Ganga doesn’t need worship. She needs protection. She doesn’t need ritual. She needs respect. She doesn’t need our offerings. She needs our accountability. If the river stops flowing, it’s not just a hydrological crisis. It’s a failure of collective consciousness. https://medium.com/@saket-sambhav/drying-of-river-ganga-what-2025s-record-low-flows-mean-and-how-we-fix-it-28fe116aefdf
