The 5A Automation Audit: Of late, I have been seeing numerous posts where managers talk a lot about reducing team size because automation can take over. The idea looks efficient on paper, but I have also seen and read about teams losing stability and decision-making strength because someone assumed speed can replace understanding. So, I took some time to reflect on what actually can work in fast-paced teams or especially, start-ups. There is definitely a pattern. Automation only works when it supports the team, not substitutes it. Implemented this in my teams and it's working. In simple words, I would like to call it: the 5A Framework. Not theory. Just a practical balance-check before automating anything. The Core (1A) Aim: Before automating a task, understand what the work is meant to achieve. If it needs judgment or ownership, it stays with people. If it is repetitive and scale-heavy, automation can handle it. Inner Layer (2As) Assist: Automation should remove friction and make daily work easier, not add more complexity. Amplify: Once the load is lighter, people should have the bandwidth to go deeper into thinking, solving, improving i.e. the parts of work that actually move the company forward. Outer Layer (2As) Align: Make sure the team understands why the automation exists and how it fits into their workflow. Clarity prevents resistance. Adapt: As priorities and scale change, automation should also evolve. A static system becomes a bottleneck. In my view, automation is not meant to replace people. It is meant to unburden them so they can focus on work that requires judgment, awareness, and direction. Just thought Iโd share this because itโs something worth considering before making the next โefficiencyโ decision.
