Do You Also Think Love is in an Extra Serving? In most homes, food is not measured by appetite, it is measured by affection. A mother feeds her child until her heart feels full, not until the baby’s stomach actually is. A grandmother insists one extra roti means she has done her duty. An aunt heaps your plate with another ladle of curry, equating refusal with disrespect. We learn early that food is not just sustenance. It is love, care, celebration, even apology. Which is why “too much” never feels like a problem at the table. Overeating, in many cultures, is a language of love. But love has its unintended cost. The extra ladle, the extra serving, the overflowing fridge, they slowly build a quiet crisis of waste, of health, of imbalance. And because it all comes wrapped in the warmth of family, we rarely question it. The truth is, the right portion is not less love. It is love that lasts longer.
