India’s First Private Gold Mine Reopens in Andhra Pradesh India has reopened the Jonnagiri gold mine in Andhra Pradesh’s Anantapur district, marking the country’s first private gold mining project since Independence. The mine, operated by Deccan Gold Mines Ltd (DGML) and its subsidiary Geomysore Services, is expected to produce about 750 kg of gold per year, with potential for expansion. This move is significant as India, the world’s second-largest gold consumer, relies heavily on imports. Domestic mining like Jonnagiri can help reduce this dependence, create jobs and revive India’s gold sector, which has been limited to state run mines like Hutti in Karnataka. With this project and new gold deposits recently found in Odisha, India’s gold mining industry is entering a new phase of growth.
