A company known for some of India’s biggest environmental controversies Sterlite in Tamil Nadu, mining protests in Odisha, lawsuits in Zambia—now talks about green aluminium, internal carbon pricing, and 2.5 GW of renewable energy. So is Vedanta transforming… or just rebranding? On one hand, the skeptic’s case is strong: • Their core businesses are still aluminium, oil & gas, steel, and zinc—industries with huge footprints. • Billions are being spent to expand mines and refineries, not shrink them. • ESG commitments are now almost a ticket to raise global capital. Cynics will say: it’s compliance dressed up as vision. But on the other hand, there’s evidence it’s not just “green PR”: • Executive bonuses are now linked to ESG outcomes. • They’ve set an internal carbon price of $15 per tonne CO₂. • New projects, like the Odisha alumina refinery, are being tied to renewable power integration. My take? It’s a mix. Maybe 60% reputation management, 40% genuine shift. But even that 40% matters—because if the incentives are real, some of those changes will compound into action. And here’s the bigger question: can a company built on extraction ever truly go “green”? Or will ESG, for such industries, always be more about optics than impact?
