I got a DM recently that said: “I’d like to walk in your footsteps in this industry.” My reply? “You will only learn the things I’ve learned if you follow my footsteps. Build your own identity.” And here’s why I said that. When you try to walk someone else’s path, you limit yourself to their lessons, their mistakes, their perspective. You cap your growth at their ceiling. But when you build your own path, you unlock lessons that are unique to you. You’ll stumble differently. You’ll win differently. And most importantly, you’ll create a story that only you can own. Yes, it’s tempting to follow others. It feels safer. It feels easier. But the real growth, the kind that shapes who you become, comes from carving out your own journey. So here’s the reminder I’d give to anyone starting out: Don’t aim to be someone’s copy. Aim to be someone’s inspiration.

Tech Twitter preaches freedom, but most founders just built themselves another job. If you can't walk away from your startup for a week, you own a prison.
