💡 Did you know that only 5–6% of Indians actually pay income tax? Of the 7.4 crore returns filed in 2022–23, nearly 70% had zero tax liability. That leaves a thin slice of the population, mostly salaried middle class professionals who are bearing the real burden. Here’s the picture: - Consumers now contribute 80% of all taxes collected, up from 65% fifteen years ago - The share of income tax from individuals has nearly doubled in a decade - The middle class pays both direct taxes (income tax) and indirect taxes (GST, fuel, services) - Corporates’ share of tax collection has declined - The 2025 Union Budget brought relief: no income tax up to ₹12 lakh and a simplified structure. - But the pressure remains, especially as public services haven’t kept pace with what taxpayers contribute. - India’s middle class is more than just a tax base. - It is the engine of growth, innovation, and consumption. - Policy must empower this group, not overburden it. What do you think? Has the middle class been carrying more than its fair share? #India #Economy #MiddleClass #TaxPolicy #Finance
