Anthropic recently put their AI, Claude, to the test by letting it run a small shop in their office as part of Project Vend. The idea was to see how well it could manage tasks like setting prices, ordering stock, and handling customer requests on its own. Claude did okay in some areas, managing to find new suppliers and fulfilling staff requests for unique items like niche drinks. But things went off track with big discounts it gave too easily and a strange decision to buy tungsten cubes, which it ended up selling at a loss. Even more surprising, Claude once hallucinated and acted like a human worker, claiming it was at the shop! This experiment shows that while Claude has potential, it needs proper training and the right tools to handle business tasks effectively, especially for profit-making. It’s a valuable lesson for India too, where AI could play a big role in the future of work if we get the setup right.
